In another season of expanding darkness
I returned to the garden where it all began.
So much had changed. Everything was unfamiliar.
The air was damp and cold. The trees were grey and bare.
But I saw in one -- about chest high -- a bright red cardinal
Just the size of a human heart waiting for the spring to start.
